The Human Central Nervous System
R. Nieuwenhuys, J. Voogd, C. van Huijzen "The Human Central Nervous System" Springer | 2007-12-04 | ISBN: 3540346848 | 970 pages | PDF | 64,5 MB
This book has become a classic in its field. The outstanding illustrative material still represents its main feature: 375 halftones and line drawings comprise a complete and convenient atlas for the interpretation of neuroimaging studies. Yet the text of this fourth edition has been thoroughly revised and expanded. Fifteen newly written chapters introduce illustrations of the gross anatomy, the blood supply and the microstructure of the central nervous system and deal with the development, topography and functional anatomy of the spinal cord, brain stem and cerebellum, diencephalons and telencephalon.
This new edition provides a clear and reliable guide to the structural and functional organization of the human central nervous system and its broad basis in descriptive and experimental neuroscience. Intended primarily for students of medicine and psychology at all levels, the book is also informative reading for practicing neurobiologists.

Dementia has been known since ancient times. Medical texts from the Roman Empire mention dementia. The Roman philosopher and politician Cicero wrote about it in the second century B.C., referring to it as “senilis stultitia.” Even then, there was disagreement about whether it was an illness or a normal part of growing old. The word dementia, which comes from the Latin for “without mind,” came into common use in the 1700s, and is mentioned in the 1808 code of law written by Napoleon Bonaparte.
Today, dementia in its various forms is diagnosed in almost 370,000 people in the United States each year. While older people make up the majority of those affected, people of any age can have it in one form or another. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, about 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease alone. It ranks seventh among the leading causes of death in the United States. Many more people are affected by non-Alzheimer’s dementias such as vascular dementia, caused by changes in the brain’s blood supply, and frontotemporal dementia, which affects only certain parts of the brain. Still others have dementia as a result of brain infections or injuries. The U.S. Congress Office of Technology Assessment estimates that as many as 6.8 million Americans are affected with some form of dementia, 1.8 million of them severely.
With 42 million people living with HIV or AIDS, this disease has grown into one of the largest global crises that the world has ever faced. Once a guaranteed death sentence, new drugs and therapies continue to transform HIV infection into a chronic and manageable disease. This book explores milestones, both tragic and encouraging, in the history of AIDS and outlines the challenges the world faces to stop the spread of this disease.
There are ten named personality disorders, each of which can range from mild to severe. Some involve a struggle with oneself; obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, for example, is often found among high achieverswho strive, often too hard, for perfection. Some disorders involve a struggle against society; antisocial personality disorder, for instance, prompts many people to commit violent acts and other crimes. Among the better-known personality disorders are narcissistic personality disorder, whose sufferers need to feel important and in control but have no regard for the feelings of others; borderline personality disorder, which mental health professionals believe is responsible for many suicides, particularly among teens; schizotypal personality disorder, which could prompt its sufferers to become delusional and unstuck from reality; and dependent personality disorder, in which a person becomes clingy, too reliant on others, and unable tomake his or her own decisions. Mental health professionals have concluded that personality disorders are responsible for a host of social ills.
